Recommended Resources
Besides the experience I have gained over the years working as an instructional designer alongside some very talented graphic artists, I am also constantly self-educating myself. The resources I have consulted are too numerous to mention here, but listed below are a brief selection of those which I have found very valuable in designing web sites.
Envisioning Information
1990 Graphics Press LLC
http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/books_ei
This is a very practical book on how to display information visually, with many great examples involving every aspect of graphical presentation. Highly recommended.
Web Style Guide, 3rd edition
2009 Yale University Press
http://webstyleguide.com/index.html
This book captures all of the latest fundamental design principles, many of which reinforced the lessons I had learned "the hard way" as a designer. A great book that I often refer to.
Access by Design
2005 New Riders Press
http://www.universalusability.com/
This book is an invaluable guide for help in creating web sites that are accessible, functional, and usable for everyone. It's a goal, sometimes difficult to achieve.
The Design of Sites, Second Edition
2007 Prentice Hall
http://www.designofsites.com/home/
The first part of this book explains the principles of web design, but the real substance, and majority, of the book are the multiple design patterns. I find myself perusing this book often.
